Before Extra Time: soccer ramblings from RVA

  • Push for the US Open Cup!

I know that I didn’t post anything about the last loss that United had against the Chicago Fire.  I wasn’t able to watch the match live and then I spent this weekend at the Before Extra Time Southwest Virginia Bureau (aka my fiance’s parent’s house).  From what I’ve read, it seems to have been a regular DCU loss: lots of possession, few goal scoring chances, give up a goal in the 80th minute on a defensive screw-up and the team just gets deflated.

So lets move forward to tomorrow night’s match in the US Open Cup against FC Dallas.  When reading up on it, I was actually surprised at the age of the US Open Cup, which started in 1914.  However, the first professional team to win it was the Richmond Kickers in 1995, and since then only one non-MLS team has won.

DC United cannot afford to treat the Cup as inferior to the MLS regular season.  They owe it to their fans to give it their all for as long as they are in the Cup.  If they were doing well in the regular season, contending for playoffs/Supporter’s Shield/MLS Cup, then I could justify not wanting to jeopardize that and play younger players/reserves in the Cup matches.  But at 0-4, United’s season is quickly slipping away.  A deep run in the Open Cup wouldn’t make up for the terrible regular season so far, but at least it would give us something to cheer for.  Also, our regular starters seem to need as much playing time together as they can get.

For my lineup, I have the regular (non-injured) starters, with a few exceptions.  With Pontius out, I put Castillo back into the lineup.  The flashes that I’ve seen from him seem to indicate that he could be good and so I think we should give him at least a couple more chances.  He also brings the Salvadorian community to the games, at least for now, so that’s worth something. Also, Pontius out means that it stays Moreno/Allsopp up top, with I guess Boyzzz as the third striking option.  Clyde Simms is trying to get fit to be in the 18 for this game; I don’t want to see him in the starting lineup regardless, but maybe a second-half runout if he’s fit and Morsink isn’t showing anything.

I’m still forever the optimist, and so will say 2-1 to United.

  • DC United vs. Chicago Fire Thoughts

DC United takes on the Chicago Fire this Saturday at 7.30pm on Saturday.  Coming into this game, Chicago is 0-2-1 and DC is 0-3-0.

The key to this game is going to be to see how United’s double-makeshift back line performs against 4-3-3 of the Chicago Fire.  Collins John, one of their three strikers, is in second place for shots on goal for the season so far, with 6.  Brian McBride is a solid striker as well.  The reserves match makes me scared about this back line, and especially Devon McTavish.  He received a pass in the United box, got it stuck under his foot, tried to pass it back to the goalkeeper Hamid, and it was intercepted and put into the goal.  This was against Real Maryland!

Another interesting tidbit from the reserves game: Christian Castillo wasn’t good enough to stay on the field for them.  From the United official website:

At the half, United made one change, bringing on trialist Edrissa Jarra – a 18-year old forward from Gambia – for Christian Castillo. The new face nearly made an immediate impact in the 47th minute, when he snuck past Real Maryland’s defenders with the ball and into the goal box – he just about made his way around the goalkeeper, but was stuffed at the last minute.

Not only did United start playing better against the Union when Castillo was taken off and Pontius put out on the wing, but the reserves team started playing better when Castillo was taken off for an 18 year old trialist!

Injuries have made the lineup a little easier to figure out.  Here’s the lineup I think we’ll see on Saturday.  If Barklage can’t go, due to a concussion, I wouldn’t mind seeing Najar out there.  He played well in the reserve match in the middle, scoring a goal off a free kick.  I also wouldn’t be too surprised if Najar got the start, but I think Onalfo will go with Barklage.

    Perkins
    McTavish Talley James Wallace
    Pontius Morsink Barklage Quaranta
    Allsopp Moreno

Hope springs eternal: I’m going to go with 2-1 to United, with a brace by Moreno.

  • A Case for Buddle

Before I start, I just want to say that I have no association whatsoever to the LA Galaxy or Edson Buddle.  I have no money riding on Edson Buddle being on the National Team.  And really, I want Davies and Ching to get back healthy because I believe that they give us the best chance to win.  However, this is an interesting thought experiment.

With all the injuries that have hit the US Men’s National Team, the position that has had the most problems finding replacements has been striker.  After Jozy Altidore, there are no guaranteed strikers that will make the team.  Much ink has been spilled about Charlie Davies and Brian Ching is now injured.  Clint Dempsey can play striker, but his natural position is out on the wing.

With all of these injuries, three primary names have come up recently as other options for striker.  Conor Casey has been put forth as a replacement for Ching in the role as target forward.  Hercules Gomez, playing for Puebla in the Mexican Primera Division, and has scored 8 goals in 13 games there.  The final name being floated is Edson Buddle, currently playing for the LA Galaxy in MLS and who has scored all 5 goals for the Galaxy so far this season.

None of these players are regulars on the team: Casey has the most experience, with 19 caps, and the most goals, with 2 (both scored during the World Cup qualifier against Honduras in October).  Hercules Gomez has appeared in two matches for the National Team, both of them in 2007, and has scored no goals.  Edson Buddle has one cap for the National Team, which occurred in 2003.

My main reason for the inclusion of Buddle, besides his current form, is the fact that he already plays with one of the key members of the US Men’s National Team: Landon Donovan. Two of Buddle’s five goals have been assisted by Donovan.  The first goal came off of a free kick from the foot of Donovan, in the game versus the Revolution, which Buddle then headed home.  Their second hookup was in the Chivas game, where Donovan beat his man and served a ball into the middle.  Buddle put away the easy goal.  This isn’t surprising: Donovan is the main creative force on that team.  But the problem with bringing in someone so late is that they have almost no experience playing with the other members of the National Team.  This preexisting bond between Donovan and Buddle proves intriguing.

Now all of this might not end up mattering.  The May camp my provide all of the time necessary for Gomez or Casey to pass Buddle or for Davies and Ching to get healthy and prove worthy of inclusion.  However, this preexisting bond between Donovan and Buddle may give him the slight bump necessary to get him on the team should Ching or Davies not be able to play.

  • Thoughts and Ratings, DCU vs. Philly

    Well, that sucked.

I’m not going to give a minute by minute recap; you can find that elsewhere.  But here are some random thoughts and my match ratings.

Castillo shows flashes, but he hasn’t shown enough to justify being a starter; Pontius played much better out of the midfield than Castillo.  Perhaps Boyzzz should get a shot starting out wide.

Quaranta is much better playing out wide than he is in the central midfield.  I don’t know if Barklage is the answer to play together with Morsink, but I’m fairly certain that it isn’t Quaranta.  He gives the team more from the wing than anyone else and so he shouldn’t be wasted in the middle trying to fill the Christian Gomez role.

I like Morsink in the central midfield.  I think he plays good defense and, when giving the opportunity, can pass decently.  I’d like to see him paired up with Clyde Simms when he gets back.  They’re both defensive midfielders, but their distribution together could work well.  Also I don’t see anyone on this team that can really play the attacking center mid role.

The defense.  Ugh.  I liked Carey Talley’s play; after Pena went out, he was the only defender that I really trusted.  In the 15 minutes that he was in, Pena played fairly well.  I liked the pace he showed running down a Union player on a breakaway and he showed good instincts.  If he’s out for any period of time, United is in trouble.  Julius James looked out of position sometimes and used his speed to try and make up for that.  Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.  I liked Rodney Wallace going forward.  And all there is to say about Dejan Jakovic is that he was playing poorly even before that red card.  This team needs Namoff and Burch back ASAP, but it will probably be several more months until they are.

I don’t like how the defense tries to pass the ball out instead of just clearing it downfield.  I understand that they’re trying to keep possession, but turnovers off those balls are deadly.  The second Union goal was the kind of clearance I’d like to see: long passes down the field that spring open counterattacks.

I haven’t been too impressed with Perkins so far.  His performance in the buildup to that first goal was poor.  He needs to smother that ball.  He had a couple of good saves, especially on that breakaway, but what I’ve seen so far doesn’t seem worth the steep price.

    Here are my match ratings.

Troy Perkins – 4: Had one great save, but thats about it.  Couldn’t do anything about the last goal, but his clearance before the first goal was poor.
Carey Talley – 6: Whenever something good happened on defense, he seemed to be involved.
Juan Manuel Pena – 5: Injured early on and taken off for Julius James.  Showed good pace and instincts.
Dejan Jakovic – 3: Even before he got sent off, he was not playing well.
Rodney Wallace – 5: Looked better going forward than in defense.
Brandon Barklage – 5: Pretty anonymous, especially after being moved into the middle, but his move into the middle coincided with DCU playing much better.
Kurt Morsink – 6: Had some good defensive plays and had better distribution in the second half.
Santino Quaranta – 7: Played much better when moved out wide.  A little lucky on his goal, but a good interception and good run.
Christian Castillo – 4: Taken off at haltime for Jaime Moreno.  Had a couple nice crosses, but held onto the ball too long and got it taken away too often.
Chris Pontius – 5: Played better when moved out wide, but needs to create more goal scoring chances.
Danny Allsopp – 5: Had a nice run for a header, but thats about all he did.

Julius James – 5: Played decently, but looked out of position sometimes and had to use his speed to try and recover.
Jaime Moreno – 7: Nice steal off the foot of Seitz, and energized the team when he came on.
Adam Cristman – 4: Pointless yellow.

Kurt Onalfo – 4: Finally realized that Quaranta needs to be played out wide and used Moreno well in the super sub role.  Needed to realize that two games ago.

  • DCU vs. Philly

For DCU, tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Union is going to be a defining moment for the season.  If United can beat the Union tonight, all is not lost.  However, being 0-3-0 with one of those loses against an expansion team would prove to be a difficult hole to climb out of, especially since United have not faced any of the preseason favorites yet.

The last match, against New England, was much better than the first.  The presence of Juan Manuel Pena really calmed down the back line and allowed Rodney Wallace to move back out wide.  Jakovic especially benefited from Pena bossing the back line.  The midfield also played better.  Morsink was improved in the defensive midfielder role and Barklage had some good moments as well.  United had a lot of possession during the game and a lot of that can be attributed to the midfield.  Even though New England scored two goals, the defense and midfield played decently for the vast majority of the match.

The main problem, of course, is the lack of scoring up top.  Both Moreno and Pontius held on to the ball too long against New England, trying to walk it in as close as possible before shooting.  This needs to change; United needs to start getting more shots off so that they can hopefully get more goals, rebounds, corners.

Here’s the team that I would like to see for tonight’s game:

    Perkins
    Talley Jakovic Pena Wallace
    Barklage Morsink Quaranta Castillo
    Allsopp Moreno

I think that Moreno is going to be more effective in the role of super sub, the role that most had him pegged for before the preseason; however, with Pontius missing some time in practice this week, I think that Moreno will still get the start. My prediction is a hopeful 2-0 to United, starting a recovery that will hopefully vaunt them back into contention for the playoffs.
